This antivirus software combines traditional signature-based security with real-time protection. The cloud-based antivirus element, Trend Micro Smart Protection Network, gathers data on brand new viruses from the community of users and then alerts every installed copy of the software about new threats. So, this antivirus software doesn’t detect threats solely based on whether they match a local signature database. It also detects threats based on the behaviors of files to see how they conduct themselves. Trend Micro uses file-reputation technology to examine files for patterns that might signify malware.

Trend Micro's anti-malware suites have historically done very well in our tests and Titanium Internet Security’s performance wasn't exactly poor this time. However, as our test system was compromised by 6 per cent of the malicious programs it was exposed to, it's not in the top flight of this year's tested security suites.

Nonetheless, it completely blocked 91 per cent of viruses and eradicated another 3 per cent after they'd got on to our system, putting it just above AVG Internet Security 2013. Trend didn't do too well in our false positive tests, though. We tried to install 100 benign programs and it blocked eight of them - the worst performance we've seen. This gave it an overall total accuracy rating of 322.5.

To its credit, Trend has included plenty of useful extra features with Internet Security. The first time it launches, you're presented with a pop-up to inform you that your subscription includes Trend's Android and Mac OS X security products, too. While the Android version is free, each Mac install requires one of your licences.

From the main screen, the Overview tab shows whether you're currently protected or not, along with some extra information about recently stopped threats and the status of the program's Facebook Privacy Scanner and Social Networking Protection modules. There are also buttons to start a manual scan, change scan settings, and access the program's advanced configuration options.

Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2013: SafeSync

SafeSync offers 5GB of online storage, shared among the three machines in the licence. Simple back-ups can be scheduled and once data is in the Trend’s cloud, it can be accessed securely from any machine running your copy of Trend Titanium Maximum Security 2013.

Scanning our 50GB of mixed files took 9 min 55 sec and checked 17,396 files, giving a scan rate of 29.2 files/sec. This lies in the middle of the range we’ve seen from other Windows virus products, and is significantly higher than from the 2012 version of Trend Micro Titanium, which only managed 6.8 files/sec.

Running the same scan a second time checked the same number of files, but a couple of minutes faster, so there’s little fingerprinting of files, although the software still speeds up. It has a small resource footprint, slowing our 1GB file transfer by only two percent.

Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2013: Detection Scores

AV-Test rated Trend Micro’s 2013 engine at 14.5/18, which is a good score, just behind the front runners. In fact, the score for protection against new attacks was a full 6.0/6.0, the first time we’ve seen this.

Unfortunately, it was not matched by the score for detection of established malware and system repair after attack, which only gave 4.0/6.0.

Trend Micro believes this category isn’t as important, because if detection works well enough, malware shouldn’t get to make system changes in the first place that need subsequent repair.

It stored 4.5/6 on usability, with a surprisingly poor score in the sub-section on system slowdown, although this doesn’t accord with our own test results.

The PC/Mobile tab shows PC- and mobile-related security features, such as the system tuner and the rescue-disk creator, as well as links to get Trend Micro’s apps for your Android devices and Mac systems. The Privacy tab deals with social networking, the Data tab covers data security along with Trend Micro’s secure erase feature, and the Family tab holds parental controls.

The settings pane, which you can access via the first tab, features basic settings for virus and spyware controls, Internet and email controls, and exception lists. You’ll also find a button for other settings, such as system startup, network settings, and the background picture for your main window. Trend Micro’s settings don’t seem to be overly geared toward the advanced user, but the suite could still do a better job of explaining the settings and features within the program.

Although this antivirus software is AV-Test Certified, it does not receive the highest marks and other independent test labs have not tested it lately. Trend Micro Titanium Antivirus + is rich in features and has good customer service. A couple of unique features are that you can customize your copy with an image, and purchase of the PC version includes a copy of Trend Micro Smart Surfing for Macintosh.
