iPhone Viruses: Just How Safe Is Your Smart Phone? PDF Print E-mail

Computer viruses are everywhere these days; not only are they costing businesses and individuals millions of pounds annually in expenditure in anti virus software and malicious software detectors. In the United Kingdom, cyber crime and computer viruses costs the UK economy a whopping £27 billion per year according a report that was released by the UK government and these number are actually more greater than the toll drugs are causing the British economy in the past 7 years.

As if it is not already getting worse, here now comes a new stream of malicious codes that can cripple your iPhone. Said to be created by an unknown 21 year old computer geek, the new worm virus called "ikee" is spreading in Australia and infecting many Apple iPhones with deadly precision that if it's not controlled can effect more units in the US and here in the UK.

This malicious code that infects the Apple smart phone's wallpaper and changes it to a picture of an 1980s singer Rick Astley as a message appears in top saying, "ikee is never going to give you up". Once you see this in your iPhone, you're in for a bit headache.

Ultimately, only owners who have phones that use Symbian Os 6, Windows Mobile OS and Android are the ones that should be really concerned with viruses in their phones especially if they use their mobile phones regularly for sharing data via Bluetooth because they have a greater chance of getting infected by mobile viruses. Maybe the time for a competent iPhone antivirus to be developed and released has come; but the problem with this is they may have a hard time to have Apple's support on this.

The reason is that most of these viruses that have affected the iPhone were only able to enter the phones system because of the weakness caused by jailbreaking the phone and this is obviously against Apple's policy. And so why jailbreak the phone in the first place and making it vulnerable to get a virus attack? Well, it the biggest concern most iPhone users; they want to use their favorite app and Apple doesn't support it, hence the jail braking at their own risk. And what a risk it is!

British mobile phone owners are renowned in taking care of their gadgets and mobile phones. In the UK, revenues from iPhone insurance purchases is a regular and consistent business. iPhone 3g insurance and iPhone 4 insurance covers for theft, accidental damages and even for loss and fraudulent calls; quite comprehensive compared a few years ago where most insurance providers don't cover like now. But we have yet to see insurance providers to protect smart phone owners from viruses and malicious codes, especially if they got it from tampering with their phone. So the best advice for now - take extra care of your iPhone and avoid using your Bluetooth as much as possible.
